Arrival day in Istanbul: from Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen to the city, connected
A city on two continents with an airport on each side. Which side you land on decides the journey; a phone that works at the gate decides how easy it is.
Install a Turkey eSIM at home and switch it on after landing at Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen: travel line on, set for mobile data, data roaming on for that line. Turkey is outside the EU and often missing from Europe plans, so check it by name. Save your hotel address and route offline before you land.
Which airport, which side of the city?
Istanbul has two international airports on opposite sides of the Bosphorus. Istanbul Airport (IST), the main hub, is on the European side, north-west of the city. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side, to the south-east. Both are in Turkey, so a Turkey eSIM works at either. Which one you land at decides how long the journey into the city is and whether you cross the Bosphorus to reach your hotel.
Coverage check: each stop against the country lists TripoSIM publishes for its regional plans
| Country on the route | Country plan | Global plan 129 listed |
|---|---|---|
| Turkey | Yes ↗ | Listed |
Turkey is outside the EU, and Europe plans often leave it out; TripoSIM's Europe regional list did not name Turkey when we checked on 7 November 2026, while its Global list did. For an Istanbul trip, a Turkey plan is the direct fit.
What should be done before you fly?
- Install the Turkey plan on home Wi-Fi, label it and switch the line off.
- Save your hotel's address offline, including the district (for example Sultanahmet, Beyoğlu or Kadıköy). Districts matter more than street names to drivers.
- Set up the apps you will use: maps, a taxi app, and any transport app. Do SMS verification at home.
- Screenshot the route from your airport to the hotel's nearest metro or tram stop.
How do you switch on at the gate?
Once phones are allowed, switch airplane mode off, turn the Turkey line on, set it for mobile data and allow data roaming on that line only. Keep your home line on for calls and SMS, with data roaming off: Turkey is outside the EU, so home-carrier roaming there can be expensive. Wait a minute for the phone to register before you test it.
How do you get into the city?
| Airport | Rail | Bus and car | What the phone does |
|---|---|---|---|
| Istanbul Airport (IST) | M11 metro line towards the city, with connections to the wider network | Havaist airport buses to many districts; taxis | Route planner for transfers; hotel map |
| Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) | Metro connection towards Kadıköy and the Asian side | Havabus airport buses; taxis | Route planner; ferry times if crossing the Bosphorus |
Services and routes change, so check the airport's own transport pages close to your trip. Istanbul's public transport, including metro, trams, buses and ferries, uses the Istanbulkart; machines at stations sell and top up cards.
Crossing the Bosphorus on arrival day?
If you land at Sabiha Gökçen and stay on the European side, or the reverse, the journey may include a ferry or a crossing by tunnel or bridge. Ferries are one of the great sights of the city and usually keep a signal on the short crossings. Save the ferry timetable and the walk from the pier to your hotel before you set off.
Does a long stay change anything?
For a holiday or business trip, no. Turkey has rules on registering foreign phones that are used in the country for an extended period, administered by its telecoms regulator. If you plan to stay for months rather than weeks, read the current official guidance before you travel. For a normal visit, switch on and go.
What should you check before leaving the terminal?
- A map loads and shows your location.
- Your taxi or transport app can see your location.
- A message goes through over data.
- Your home line shows signal for SMS codes.

What if Istanbul is only a transit stop?
Istanbul Airport is one of the world's big transfer hubs, and many travellers pass through without leaving it. If you stay airside for a few hours, the airport's Wi-Fi is usually enough, and there is no need to start a Turkey plan. If you have a long layover and plan to go into the city, entry rules depend on your nationality, and the journey into the centre and back takes a large share of the time. In that case a short Turkey plan is worth having: it keeps maps, transport apps and the trip back to the airport working. Our layover guide covers the decision in more detail.
Which arrival-day mistakes are most common in Istanbul?
| Mistake | What happens | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| Assuming a Europe plan covers Turkey | No data on arrival | Check Turkey by name, or buy a Turkey plan |
| Home line's data roaming left on | Non-EU roaming charges from the home carrier | Off before you land |
| Hotel saved without its district | A long ride to the wrong side of the city | Save the district and the nearest landmark |
| Landing at SAW with a hotel on the European side, no plan | A late-night crossing worked out on the spot | Route and ferry or road crossing saved in advance |
A checklist for the night before you fly
- Turkey plan installed, labelled and switched off.
- Which airport you land at, and whether your hotel is on the European or Asian side.
- Route to the hotel saved offline, with the district and a nearby landmark.
- Transport card and ferry options noted if you will cross the Bosphorus.

Not for a normal visit. Long stays fall under Turkey's rules for foreign phones; read the official guidance if you will stay for months.
Will I get a Turkish phone number with a travel eSIM?
Not with a data-only eSIM. Keep your home line on for calls and SMS codes.
