Colombia, Ecuador and the Galápagos: a connection plan from Cartagena to the islands

Caribbean coast, mountain cities, the equator and an archipelago where connectivity is limited by design. Plan the mainland online and the islands offline.

The short answer

For three weeks in Colombia and Ecuador with the Galápagos, plan two countries: a Colombia plan for Cartagena, Medellín and Bogotá and an Ecuador plan for Quito and the islands, or one plan whose list names both. Mainland cities are well served. In the Galápagos, coverage is limited to populated areas and boat days are offline, so download everything first.

What does this route look like for your phone?

Two halves. In Colombia, you move between cities by short domestic flights, from the Caribbean coast at Cartagena to Medellín in the Andes and the capital, Bogotá. Then you cross to Ecuador, by flight or overland through the southern Andes, for Quito and a flight out to the Galápagos. The mainland half is a city trip with good coverage. The island half is the opposite: limited signal, boat days and a place where most visitors are happy to be offline.

Coverage check: each stop against the country lists TripoSIM publishes for its regional plans

Reading it: Plans whose list names every country on this route: Global ↗. One plan per country also works. Lists as shown on TripoSIM's public plan pages on 7 November 2026; they can change, so check the list on the plan you buy.

When we checked on 7 November 2026, TripoSIM's regional lists did not include a South America plan; its Global list named both Colombia and Ecuador. Two country plans are the direct fit, and they let each validity start in its own country.

What should you plan for in Colombia?

StopWhat to expectPreparation
CartagenaCity and old town servedRide-hailing or taxi app set up at home
Day trips to the islandsPatchy on boats and outer islandsTour pick-up details saved
MedellínCity served; hillside areas varyOffline map; cable-car and metro routes saved
Coffee region or GuatapéTowns served; rural roads quieterRoute loaded before leaving
BogotáCity servedAirport transfer saved for the onward flight

Ride-hailing and taxi apps are widely used in Colombian cities; set up the one you plan to use, including any SMS verification, before you leave home. A data-only travel eSIM has no phone number, so verification codes go to your home number.

Flight or overland to Ecuador?

Most travellers fly from Bogotá to Quito. Overland travellers cross at the Rumichaca bridge between Ipiales in Colombia and Tulcán in Ecuador, often after visiting the Las Lajas sanctuary. On a flight, switch to the Ecuador line after landing. Overland, treat it like any land border:

  1. The night before: passport scan, onward bus ticket and the first Ecuador hotel saved offline.
  2. At the border: keep the Colombia line until you are through Ecuadorian entry.
  3. After entry: switch to the Ecuador line, set it for data and allow data roaming on it.

What is connectivity like in the Galápagos?

Limited, and that is part of the experience. The Galápagos are a protected national park with a few populated towns, mainly on Santa Cruz, San Cristóbal and Isabela. Coverage, where it exists, is concentrated in and around those towns. On boat trips between islands, at visitor sites and on most cruises, expect to be offline; some boats and hotels offer Wi-Fi, often slow and sometimes paid.

  • Before flying out from the mainland: download offline maps, books, films and anything you need for the week.
  • Save documents: park entry requirements, transit control paperwork, boat or hotel bookings and return flight details, offline and on paper.
  • Tell people at home that messages may be once a day at best.
  • Plan uploads for Quito, not the islands.

Entry requirements for the Galápagos, including fees and pre-registration, are set by Ecuador and change from time to time. Check current official information before booking.

Does altitude change anything for your phone?

Not for the eSIM. But Bogotá and Quito are high, and long days in thin air on the way to the coast or the islands are tiring. It is one more reason to do your connection set-up at home rather than on arrival day.

Which mistakes are common on this route?

A checklist before you fly to the islands

  • Ecuador line on and working in Quito before the island flight.
  • Downloads done: maps of the islands, books, films and podcasts.
  • Island paperwork, boat and hotel bookings saved offline and printed.
  • Return flight details saved offline.
  • Family told that messages may be once a day.

How do you count validity on this route?

Count each country separately. The Colombia plan covers Cartagena, Medellín and Bogotá until your flight or crossing to Ecuador. The Ecuador plan starts when it first connects in Ecuador and covers Quito, the islands and your return to the mainland. The island days count even when you are offline, because validity keeps running. TripoSIM plans start on first connection at the destination, so installing both at home before you fly does not start either. Add a spare day to the Ecuador plan for a delayed island flight.

Questions travellers ask

Does an Ecuador eSIM work in the Galápagos?

The islands are part of Ecuador, so an Ecuador plan applies, but coverage there is limited to populated areas. Plan to be offline much of the time.

Is there one eSIM for Colombia and Ecuador?

Some wider plans list both. Two country plans are the simple fit and let each validity start in its own country.

Will I have signal on a Galápagos cruise?

Usually not between islands. Some boats have Wi-Fi; treat it as a bonus.

Can I receive SMS codes with a travel eSIM?

Not on a data-only eSIM. Keep your home line on for calls and SMS codes.
