Mexico, Belize and Guatemala: a Mundo Maya route plan from Cancún to Tikal

Three countries in a fortnight, two land borders, a water taxi to the cayes and a jungle full of temples. North American plans stop at the first border.

The short answer

For a Mundo Maya trip from Cancún through Belize to Guatemala's Flores and Tikal, plan three countries. Regional North America plans typically cover Mexico but not Belize or Guatemala, so the simple set-up is three country plans installed at home, each switched on after its border. Expect gaps in the jungle around Tikal and on boat days.

Why does this route need three plans?

Because the regional plans that cover Mexico are usually built for North America. When we checked TripoSIM's lists on 7 November 2026, its North America plan named Mexico, the United States and Canada, and neither Belize nor Guatemala appeared on its regional or Global lists. TripoSIM does sell Belize and Guatemala as separate destinations. So the clean set-up for this route is three country plans, each installed at home and each switched on after you cross into its country.

How does the route usually run?

A popular shape starts in Cancún, heads down the Riviera Maya to Tulum and the lagoon at Bacalar, crosses into Belize near Chetumal, takes a water taxi out to Caye Caulker, returns to the mainland for San Ignacio in the west, then crosses into Guatemala to stay on the island town of Flores and visit Tikal.

How do the two border days work?

  1. The night before each crossing: save your passport scan, any entry paperwork, the shuttle or bus ticket and your next hotel's address offline.
  2. At the border: keep using the current country's line until you have entered the next country.
  3. After entry: switch off the old line, switch on the new one, set it for data and allow data roaming on it.
  4. If nothing connects: restart the phone, or choose a local network manually in the line's settings.

Shuttles between the Riviera Maya, Belize and Flores often handle much of the border process for you, but you still cross on foot and show your own documents. Entry rules and exit fees change; check current official information for your nationality.

What should you prepare for Tikal?

Tikal is a vast archaeological park in the rainforest. Expect little or no mobile signal across most of the site. Many visitors go at dawn with a guide; arrange the pick-up time and the guide's contact the evening before, download an offline map of the park, and carry water and a power bank. If you are with a group, agree a meeting point at a named temple in case you get separated.

Is it a problem to have three eSIMs on one phone?

No. Most eSIM-capable phones can store several eSIM profiles, though usually only one or two can be active at a time. Label each by country ("Mexico", "Belize", "Guatemala"), keep the inactive ones switched off, and do not delete any until its plan has ended. Your home line stays on for calls and SMS, with its data roaming off.

A checklist before the first border

  • Mexico, Belize and Guatemala plans installed and labelled, each line off until you arrive.
  • Shuttle or bus tickets for each crossing saved offline, with pick-up places.
  • Passport scan and entry documents saved offline.
  • Offline maps for the Yucatán, Belize and the Petén around Tikal.
  • Lodge addresses for the jungle nights saved offline.

How do you count validity on this route?

With one plan per country, count each country separately: Mexico from landing in Cancún to the day you cross into Belize; Belize from the crossing to the day you reach Guatemala; Guatemala from there to your flight home. Short stays, like a few days in Belize, can use a short plan. TripoSIM plans start on first connection at the destination, so installing all three at home before you fly does not start any of them. Add a spare day to the last plan for a delayed shuttle or flight.

Questions travellers ask

Does a Mexico eSIM work in Belize?

Only if the plan's list includes Belize; North America plans usually do not. Add a Belize plan.

Is there signal at Tikal?

Expect little or none across most of the site. Plan the visit offline and agree a meeting point.

Can I keep three eSIMs on my phone?

Usually yes. Most phones store several eSIMs; label them by country and keep inactive lines off.

When should I switch lines at each border?

After you have entered the next country, not before, so each plan's validity starts in its own country.
