Vietnam north to south, then overland to Cambodia: a mobile data route plan

A long thin country, a bay full of boats, overnight trains and a bus across the border to Phnom Penh. Where the signal holds and where to work offline.

The short answer

For three weeks from Hanoi to Ho Chi Minh City and overland to Cambodia, use one eSIM whose list names both Vietnam and Cambodia, or a plan for each. Install both at home, keep the Cambodia line off until you cross, and save your visa, bus ticket and hotel address offline before the border day. Expect gaps on Ha Long Bay cruises.

What does this route look like for your phone?

A long line with one border at the end. Vietnam stretches more than 1,500 kilometres from north to south, and most travellers cover it with a mix of short domestic flights, overnight trains and buses: Hanoi and Ha Long Bay in the north, Hue and Hoi An in the centre, Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong Delta in the south. From there a bus crosses into Cambodia for Phnom Penh, and a final leg reaches Siem Reap for the temples of Angkor.

That gives you two countries, one land border, a few nights on boats or trains, and a lot of moving. A phone that works on arrival at every stop is the difference between finding your hotel and haggling at a taxi rank.

Reading it: Plans whose list names every country on this route: Asia ↗, Global ↗. One plan per country also works. Lists as shown on TripoSIM's public plan pages on 7 November 2026; they can change, so check the list on the plan you buy.

When we checked on 7 November 2026, TripoSIM's Asia regional plan listed both Vietnam and Cambodia, which makes this a one-plan trip if you choose it. Two country plans work equally well and let each validity start in its own country.

Where will the signal hold, and where will it drop?

LegWhat to expectPreparation
HanoiBusy city, well servedInstall checks done; ride-hailing app set up
Ha Long Bay cruiseSignal near shore, gaps among the karsts and farther outTell people you will be offline overnight
Hanoi → Hue by sleeper trainIntermittent through rural and hilly stretchesTicket and arrival directions saved offline
Hue → Hoi AnThe coastal pass road and rail line can be patchyOffline map of Hoi An old town
Ho Chi Minh City and the Mekong DeltaCity well served; delta boats less soTour pick-up details saved
Bus to Phnom PenhBorder area and rural road can be quietVisa, bus ticket and hotel address offline
Siem Reap and AngkorTown served; some temple areas quieterTemple pass details and driver contact saved

These are planning patterns, not measurements. The point is to know which days to prepare for, not to predict every bar of signal.

How do you handle the Cambodia border day?

Most overland travellers take a bus from Ho Chi Minh City to Phnom Penh, crossing at Moc Bai on the Vietnamese side and Bavet on the Cambodian side. The process involves leaving the bus, exiting Vietnam, entering Cambodia and getting back on. Your phone can behave oddly in the border zone, briefly showing a network from the other country, or none.

  1. The night before: save your Cambodian visa or e-visa, passport scan, bus ticket and the Phnom Penh hotel address offline.
  2. On the bus: keep using the Vietnam line until you are through Cambodian immigration.
  3. After entry: with one plan listing both countries, the phone re-registers by itself. With two plans, switch the data line to the Cambodia line and allow data roaming on it.
  4. If nothing connects: restart the phone, or turn off automatic network selection and pick a Cambodian network manually.

Visa rules change and differ by nationality. Check the official Cambodian e-visa and entry information for your passport before you travel, and never rely on a screenshot of someone else's advice.

Which apps should be set up before landing in Hanoi?

Ride-hailing and food-delivery apps are widely used in Vietnamese cities, and Grab is common in both Vietnam and Cambodia. Set up the apps you plan to use at home, including payment, because some ask for a verification code by SMS. A data-only travel eSIM has no phone number, so that code goes to your home number: keep your home line switched on for calls and SMS, with its data roaming off. Messaging apps such as WhatsApp keep working over the eSIM's data, because they are tied to the number you registered them with, not to the SIM that carries the data.

A checklist before you start in Hanoi

  • Vietnam plan installed and labelled, line off until you land; a Cambodia plan installed too if you use one per country.
  • Night-train and bus tickets saved offline, with the station or pick-up address for each.
  • Ride-hailing app set up with your home number before you leave.
  • Offline maps for Hanoi, Hoi An, Ho Chi Minh City and Siem Reap.
  • Cambodia entry documents saved offline and on paper.

Questions travellers ask

Does a Vietnam eSIM work in Cambodia?

Only if the plan's country list includes Cambodia. Otherwise add a Cambodia plan for the end of the trip.

Will I have signal on a Ha Long Bay cruise?

Near the shore, often; among the islands and farther out, expect gaps. Plan an offline night.

Can I receive SMS codes in Vietnam with a travel eSIM?

Not on a data-only eSIM. Codes go to your home number, so keep your home line on for SMS.

When should I switch to the Cambodia line?

After you have passed Cambodian immigration, not before. With one plan for both countries, you do not need to switch.
