The Mekong loop: Thailand, Laos and Cambodia by slow boat, train and bus
Two days on a slow boat down the Mekong, a high-speed train through the Lao hills and a remote river border into Cambodia. The route where offline-first planning pays for itself.
For a loop from Bangkok through northern Thailand, down the Mekong into Laos and south to Cambodia, choose one eSIM whose list names Thailand, Laos and Cambodia. It reconnects by itself after each border. Expect long gaps on the two-day slow boat and near remote border posts, so save visas, tickets and guesthouse details offline before each crossing.
Why is this loop a good fit for one regional plan?
Because you cross two land borders, spend nights in all three countries and rarely know your exact dates in advance. The classic shape runs north from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, crosses into Laos at the river border near Chiang Khong and Huay Xai, takes the two-day slow boat down the Mekong to Luang Prabang, continues to Vientiane, heads south to the 4,000 Islands near the Cambodian border, and finishes in Siem Reap. A plan that lists all three countries reconnects by itself at each border, so a change of plan in Laos never leaves you buying something new in a hurry.

When we checked on 7 November 2026, TripoSIM's Asia regional plan listed Thailand, Laos and Cambodia, so one plan can cover the loop. If you prefer country plans, install all three at home and keep each line off until you arrive.
What happens on the Mekong slow boat?
The slow boat from Huay Xai to Luang Prabang takes two days, with a night in the village of Pakbeng. The river runs through steep, forested hills with few towns. Expect long stretches without signal, short bursts near villages and Pakbeng, and a phone that drains its battery searching for a network. This is a good day to switch on airplane mode and enjoy the river.
- Before boarding: guesthouse address in Pakbeng and Luang Prabang, a downloaded map of both, your Lao visa paperwork and an offline book or playlist.
- On board: airplane mode for long stretches; a power bank charged the night before.
- In Pakbeng: check messages while you have a signal or guesthouse Wi-Fi.
How do the two borders work for your phone?
| Border | Typical crossing | What to have offline | After crossing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thailand → Laos | Chiang Khong to Huay Xai, over the Friendship Bridge | Lao visa paperwork, slow-boat ticket, first guesthouse | One plan: wait for it to re-register. Country plans: switch to the Laos line |
| Laos → Cambodia | From the 4,000 Islands area by minibus to Stung Treng and on | Cambodian visa or e-visa, onward ticket, Siem Reap hotel | Expect a quiet stretch; switch lines only after entry |
Rules at land borders, visa options and accepted documents change. Check the official immigration pages for your nationality before you travel.
Does the Laos–China railway change anything?
The railway between Vientiane and Luang Prabang has made that leg far faster than the old mountain road. Trains run through many tunnels in the hills, so expect frequent short drops. Tickets are commonly bought in advance through official channels or at stations; check current arrangements before you travel and save your ticket offline. If you take the road instead, plan for a long, winding day with patchy coverage.
How long should the plan's validity be?
Longer than you think. This loop is easy to stretch: an extra night in Luang Prabang, a few more days on the islands. Count days from the first connection in Bangkok to your flight home and add a margin. If your plan can be topped up, check how top-ups affect validity before relying on them; if not, it is simpler to choose a longer validity at the start.

Which mistakes are common on this loop?
| Mistake | What happens | What to do instead |
|---|---|---|
| A Thailand-only plan for the whole loop | No data from Huay Xai onwards | A plan listing all three, or three country plans |
| Visa papers only in an email | Nothing to show at a remote border with no signal | Saved offline and printed |
| No power bank on the slow boat | Dead phone before Luang Prabang | Charge it the night before |
| Tight validity | The plan ends while you are still on the islands | Add a margin of several days |
Does the loop work in reverse?
Yes, and the connection plan simply flips: start in Siem Reap, cross into Laos near the 4,000 Islands, travel north to Vientiane and Luang Prabang, take the slow boat upstream to Huay Xai (it is slower against the current) and cross back into Thailand at Chiang Khong. Everything about saving documents before each border still applies. If you use country plans, install all three at home before you start.
A checklist for the three borders
- All plans installed at home, each labelled with its country and switched off.
- Passport scan, visa documents and onward tickets saved offline before every crossing.
- Slow-boat days planned as offline days: books, podcasts and maps downloaded in Chiang Rai or Luang Prabang.
- Guesthouse addresses saved for the first night after each border.
- A power bank, because long boat and bus days rarely come with a socket.
Questions travellers ask
Is there signal on the Mekong slow boat?
Only near villages and at Pakbeng. Expect long stretches without signal over the two days.
Does a Thailand eSIM work in Laos?
Only if the plan's list includes Laos. Choose a plan that lists all three countries, or add a Laos plan.
Do I need to change anything at the Laos border?
With one plan that lists both countries, usually not: the phone re-registers by itself. With country plans, switch the data line after entry.
How long should my plan last for this loop?
Count from the first connection in Bangkok to your flight home and add several spare days.
